I wonder how Rush feels now. This will be the 4th time in recent memory that the hated ACLU has come to the defense of a republican. That must just chap them to think that a supposedly left wing organization would come to their defense. As far as Craig goes, he should not be ashamed to be gay if he is, but by the same token whether you're guilty or not you always plead innocent and get a lawyer….jeez what was he thinking!

In a perfect world, Larry Craig would overcome years of lying and oppression, admit he's a big 'ole girl, divorce his wife and go find a loving man with whom he can share a real life. He would then have an article in the Advocate stating his newfound freedom and sense of self-worth and live happy ever after.

However, if he's going to remain a closeted nutcase he needs to resign and go crawl under a rock.

I don't believe that this has anything to do with Senator Craig's sexual orientation, his Senate voting record or political affiliation. What is sticking in my mind is the fact that he PLEAD GUILTY to the charge of disorderly conduct. So did he lie then, or is he lying now?

Personally I could care less that the guy is gay, bisexual, or whatever. But like former NJ Gov. McGreevy and other sexually ambiguous politicians before him, Craig took the low road by A) not admitting to the truth, and B) dragging his poor wife through the mud along with him, using her as a prop in the pathetic, selfish attempt to convince the public of a lie. It's always the cover-up that's totally inexcusable.

I believe that it is possible that Larry was a victim of police abuse of power. Larry is an excellant Senator and I'll vote for him again. I remember the "Anybody but Church" campain here Idaho that resulted in the loss of its best senator back then. Is the same special interest group behind trying to distroy the good name of Larry Graig? Think about it!

Having been a victim of police abuse of power myself. I understand the process of pleading quilty to make the false charge go away.

Last year I held a benefit concert (non-alcohol) here in Idaho Falls to raise money for the food bank and local recovery centers. The police arrived in mass after 11:15 to shut it down and in the course of conversations I was arrested for a false charge of assalt and battery on and officer, distubing the peace with intent to fight, and failure to show ID in an investigation. I was hand cuffed and taken to jail. The judicial system basically forced me, by the circumsatances to plead guilty to a reduced charge of disturbing the peace even though I did nothing illegal other than tell the officer to F.O. which I quickly found out that in Idaho free speech is not permitted.

Larry's problems just don't all add up. I've never seen solicitaion in Airport restrooms, folks are to stressed out by TSA taking their water, deoderants tooth paste and such.

It all boils down to one man's word against another. One Senators word against a police officer. Who do you trust? Look at Larry's political power. Are there powers out there that want him removed. You bet, why did this power want Frank Church removed from office? Looks like same same to me. Just a different plan of attack. And this attack is hitting below the belt. Ha! (Now that's funny I don't care who you are!)

In Larry's case what is the real issue? Energy? Sound like a conspiracy? I work in the nuke industry and I've seen some really bad things happen to folks because they didn't conform. Don't believe what is in front of your eyes.

HUM.  i was not old enough to know what the heck was going on when Frank Church was running for re-election in 1980, but i found this interesting article discussing the "Anyone But Church" (ABC) campaign . . .

Since ABC was organized nearly two years ago, it has kept Church on the defensive with a ceaseless barrage of charges. "I don't know what else they can say about me," says the bewildered Senator. Under the guidance of the Virginia-based National Conservative Political Action Committee, ABC has poured more than $200,000 into its attack on Church. The organization can raise and spend an unlimited amount because it is legally considered an independent committee. Says ABC Chairman Don Todd: "We are critical in softening Church's support. We've made the race what it is today." Adds N.C.P.A.C. Chairman Terry Dolan: "We're not people who crave respectability. We care about winning elections. If we have to step on a few toes, we'll do it."

Once well known as a boy orator, Church still casts a spell in a land where the spoken word is revered. He has struck back at his tormentors by labeling them "scummy and fraudulent" and comparing their technique to Hitler's "Big Lie." The right-wing radicals, Church trumpets, are trying to take over the "entire American political process." He does not go out of his way to bring up national or international issues or boast of his chairmanship of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. But he defends his past stands and reminds critics: "Once I was against the war in Viet Nam, and the people of this state were overwhelmingly for it. But I think time proved I was right." When he was asked why he gave the Panama Canal to the Communists, Church shot back: "We didn't give it to the Communists. We may have saved it from going Communist by making Panama a working partner. We made a friend instead of an enemy."

Maybe Idaho can get a replacement senator more like Frank Church.

Meteorite Lands in Peru

According to the townspeople, the illnesses began after the meteorite crashed and they began to touch the glowing rock believing it had some type of monetary value.

Aside from the hundreds of townspeople that were affected, Tejada reported that 8 police officers had to be hospitalized after having taken samples of the meteorite.

Blood samples are being taken and there are several teams of specialists in the area.

Scientists confirmed yesterday that the meteorite that caused a 17 meter (55 foot) wide and 5 meter (16 foot) deep crater in Puno, Peru was a chondrite meteorite. The water in the crater is to be drained and several teams of scientists from different countries will take samples from the crater itself and from surrounding areas. - living in peru

 

 

However, SPACEWEATHER has some questions:

There is much discussion on the Internet today concerning a reported meteorite impact in Peru which may have gouged a 10- to 30-meter wide crater near Peru's border with Bolivia. Bad-smelling fumes from the crater are said to have sickened dozens and perhaps hundreds of people in a nearby village. Could this be true?

There is indeed a hole in the ground in Peru, pictured above, and by all accounts it smells bad, but it is not likely of cosmic origin.  In order to blast a 30-meter crater, a meteorite would have to hit the ground with about as much energy as 0.1-to-1 kiloton of TNT--akin to a tactical nuclear weapon. This should leave a clear signal in worldwide seismic and infrasound records, but so far no such signals are being reported by authorities. In short, we remain unconvinced. Stay tuned for updates.

UPDATE: A scientist from Peru's Geological, Mining and Metallurgical Institute says that a chondritic meteorite is at the bottom of the crater: news report. There is also mounting evidence that the crater is associated at least coincidentally with a grave health problem in the area.

Now tourists are asking about a new destination in the Twin Cities, says Karen Evans, information specialist at the information counter at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport.

A common request is, "Excuse me, can you please tell me where the Larry Craig bathroom is?"

Evans was just 15 minutes into her shift Friday afternoon and already had heard the request four times.

"It's become a tourist attraction," Evans said with a smile. "People are taking pictures."

Since news broke Aug. 27 of the arrest of Idaho Sen. Craig in an airport restroom here, the airport has been fielding requests for directions to the men's room in question, which is conveniently located just off the central food court and popular shopping area.

As Boise continues to grow houses into the foothills and desert surrounding the city, look for more incidents involving wildlife like Wednesday’s elk chase.

In a nutshell, at least 5 elk wandered into the east end of town along Warm Springs Ave. Before it was over, one young bull ended up being chased by city cops along with Fish and Game cops all the way to the bench near Curtis Road and Cassia.

One Boise copper popped of two rounds from a handgun injuring the two point bull. After it was stopped, Fish and Game officers fired a tranquilizer into the animal which was later humanely killed.

While we admittedly are looking at this long running incident (several hours, several miles) with the benefit of hindsight, we just don’t see the need to chase all over town after an elk.

Frustrated by criticism from the United States over their slow progress towards political goals meant to foster national reconciliation, Iraqi leaders said Washington would be better served by examining its own progress in the unpopular war.

“The Americans always try to pretend the responsibility for cleaning up this mess isn’t theirs and tend to shift blame onto Iraq, Iran and Syria for everything that goes wrong,” said veteran Kurdish lawmaker Mahmoud Othman. - reuters

NEW MEXICO FIREBALL

On Sept 13th at approximately 3 o'clock in the morning MDT, an extremely bright fireball streaked over New Mexico, "It was terrifying," says eyewitness Susan K. Burgess. "I was stargazing outside my house near Santa Fe when the landscape started becoming very bright, as if a brilliant full moon was quickly rising from the southwest. The fireball itself [slowly moved] over the house and disintegrated with a great deal of scatter in the northwest sky."

At the Sandia National Labs in Albuquerque, a Sentinel all-sky video camera captured the fireball in flight:

Based on data from the video, the visual magnitude of the fireball was -14.6, about four times brighter than a full Moon!

"The fireball was a pure emerald green, uncomfortably bright to look at," adds Harald Edens located in the Magdalena Mountains west of Socorro, NM. "The object was disintegrating when I saw it, with pieces parallel-tracking and trailing the fireball. Those smaller pieces had all different colors--most notably red. I think it has been a piece of space junk."

Amateur radio astronomer Thomas Ashcraft not only photographed the fireball, but also recorded echos of a distant radio station bouncing off the meteor's ionized trail: "This fireball turned night into day!" he says.  ashcraft movie
